![]() Under Environment, you can adjust the time of day, the season, and the weather. I found some small, local, non-towered airports like Olean and Dunkirk, New York, as well as larger airports including Buffalo, O'Hare, and Raleigh-and could even choose a specific runway. The default airport is Honolulu, but you can change it in the Location menu by providing your favorite airport's ICAO airport code identifier. The menu on the left side of the application window provides configuration options. Once the installation finished, I launched it from the GUI, but you can also launch the application from a terminal by entering: $ fgfs Configuring FlightGear On Ubuntu 18.04, I had to install a repository: $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:saiarcot895/flightgear Fedora users can consult the Fedora installation page to get FlightGear running. It's easy to install on both Fedora and Ubuntu Linux. Its documentation includes an online manual a wiki with portals for users and developers and extensive tutorials (such as one for its default aircraft, the Cessna 172p) to teach you how to operate it. It runs well on my Linux laptop with an i5 processor and only 4GB of RAM. Getting startedįlightGear's hardware requirements are fairly modest, including an accelerated 3D video card that supports OpenGL for smooth framerates. Its goal was to create a sophisticated, robust, extensible, and open flight simulator framework for use in academia and pilot training or by anyone who wants to play with a flight simulation scenario. The FlightGear project began in 1996 due to dissatisfaction with commercial flight simulation programs, which were not scalable. It's a full-featured, open source flight simulator that runs on Linux, MacOS, and Windows. Very frustrating. If you've ever dreamed of piloting a plane, you'll love FlightGear. I'm wondering if I need to make them smaller. I can't even line up on the runway for the tutorial's landing excercise which is simply reducing throttle, lowering flaps and more or less gliding in for the landing. Just thought it'd be less "jerky" to fly the Cessna. I know I'm new at this, but I flew in the Coast Guard as a plane captain (enlisted) on HH52 helicopters, the old Gruman Albatross, C131's converted for search and rescue so I am not entirely unfamiliar with flying. but can't concentrate for too long without having to make corrections. ![]() My problem is that I need to look down in the cockpit at indicators, air speed, altitude, heading, etc. So much so that I'm struggling just to maintain a steady heading. This Cessna requires a lot, I mean a lot of control. I was under the impression that once trimmed the aircraft would at least maintain some sense of stability. George georgem1956 Posts: 35 Joined: Thu 3:30 pm Thanks in advanced for any thoughts on this. I wonder if I made them too big? It's really tough flying the Cessna, constantly struggling to keep it level and haven't been able to line up on the landing tutorial as the plane veers off it's glide path and I can't keep it centered, when if I'm interpreting the tutorial's intention, landing is just a matter of reducing power and lowering flaps. There's got to be some calibration I'm missing. Could there be a separate Joystick calibration that I need to do before even launching the simulator? I set my dead zones using the x52 tester in windows. Finally, I have to grab the joystick and recover. ![]() I'm furiously tapping the trim keys for elevator and aileron but nothing is working. I'm trying to set the trim for straight and level flight hands off, but as soon as I release the joy stick the noses starts to rise and it banks left. Once air born I can't stabilize the aircraft. During take off, I zig and zag along the run way, haven't figure out how to get the plane to just go straight during take off roll, but that's not really my issue. I have the Saitek X52 joystick and throttle system. New to flight simulation so thanks for patience.
